Calgary Flames To Give Back To Community

On October 6, 2011, while the other thirty teams in the NHL were preparing for the start of the season, RONA, Inc., Canada’s largest hardware distributor and retailer, partnered with The Calgary Flames Foundation for Life and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) Goals & Dreams fund, to reveal the newly refurbished Whitehorn Community Association Rink.

To mark the unveiling of the new rink, the Mayor of Calgary, Naheed Nenshi, and the Flames’ star defenseman and fan favorite Jay Bouwmeester were on site. Community members were also treated with a special autograph session with Bouwmeester.

“Together, RONA, the Calgary Flames Foundation and the NHLPA share a commitment to the promotion of important values like team spirit, social responsibility and determination. To show this in a tangible way, we teamed up and refurbished the outdoor rink, which is now completely renovated and ready for young people here in the region to enjoy,” said Luc Rodier, RONA’s Vice President, Retail for Western Canada. “Restoration of the outdoor rink at the Whitehorn Community Centre is in keeping with our goal to promote physical activity among young people. It’s also a way of thanking the community for their loyalty and support.”

Three surrounding schools – Colonel J. Fred Scott School, École St. Wilfrid School and Annie Gale School share the rink year-round for physical education. The NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund has also provided each of these schools with 25 sets of hockey equipment, in addition to new hockey nets, player’s benches and rubber mats

Combined, RONA and the Calgary Flames invested more than $60,000 in repairs. The new rink includes a new LED lighting system that was donated by ENMAX Corporation and will substantially reduce energy use and overall costs, along with new asphalt and rinkboards.

By creating the new rink and donating equipment, the Calgary Flames along with RONA and the NHLPA are providing young families with the opportunity to let their children become future stars.
