Indianapolis Colts 10 (0-8), Tennessee Titans 27 (4-3)
The Colts went into Nashville hoping for their first victory of the year. Even though their stats were not bad, they still were unable to overtake the Titans. Colts Quarterback, Curtis Painter, threw for 250 yards and rushed for another 79. The Titans were fortunate to get 14 points off turnovers. They led 20-0 at the half and never looked back.
Miami Dolphins 17 (0-7), New York Giants 20 (5-2)
For the first 54 minutes in this one, it looked like the Dolphins might go back to Miami with their first victory of the year. They led 14-10 at halftime and didn’t relinquish that lead until Victor Cruz caught a 25 yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning. Manning threw for 349 yards. For the Dolphins, their star was Reggie Bush who rushed for 103 yards.
New Orleans Saints 21 (5-3), St. Louis Rams 31 (1-6)
The Saints came into this one fresh off their lambasting of Indianapolis just a week ago, 62-7 and not many gave the Rams a chance in this contest. Following a pregame ceremony honoring the St. Louis Cardinals, the Rams went out looking like champions of their own. The story of this one was Rams running back, Steven Jackson. Out of nowhere he rushed for 159 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns. Drew Brees was hurt by two interceptions. The Rams claim their first victory of the year.
Jacksonville Jaguars 14 (2-6), Houston Texans 24 (5-3)
Houston knew they couldn’t overlook this game, especially after Jacksonville beat the Baltimore Ravens a week ago on Monday Night Football. The Texans let the Jaguars hang around by committing two fumbles, which led to the 14 Jaguars points. When they needed to come up big, the Texans defense did just that to give them the win.
Arizona Cardinals 27 (1-6), Baltimore Ravens 30 (5-2)
This might have been the wildest game on Sunday. Arizona took a 24-6 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Ravens and their fans were not pleased. Whatever Ravens Coach, John Harbaugh, said during halftime woke his team up. In the second half, Baltimore outscored the Cardinals 24-3. It was the biggest comeback in Ravens history. The Ravens defense sacked Cardinals Quarterback, Kevin Kolb, five times.
Minnesota Vikings 24 (2-6), Carolina Panthers 21 (2-6)
In only his third career start, Vikings quarterback, Christian Ponder, got his first win. He did so by outlasting Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton. This game was close the entire time. The Vikings tied it for a final time in the third quarter with just under two minutes to go and kicked a game winning field goal in the fourth. Ponder threw for 236 yards, while Newton threw for 290.
Detroit Lions 45 (6-2), Denver Broncos 10 (2-5)
The Lions came into this game knowing a loss would hurt their chances to stay competitive in the NFC North. Having lost their last two games, the Lions took out their frustrations on the Broncos, in Denver. The Lions defense sacked Broncos quarterback, Tim Tebow, seven times. Tebow never got going in this one. Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford, sustained a sprained right ankle a week ago and it did not appear to phase him. He threw for 267 yards.
Washington Redskins 0 (3-4), Buffalo Bills 23 (5-2)
Toronto was the site for this one, a home-game for the Bills north of the border. The Bills defense held Washington to 178 total yards and sacked Redskins quarterback, John Beck, nine times. Bills quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, threw for 262 yards. Washington started this season 3-1 and since then are 0-3.
New England Patriots 17 (5-2), Pittsburgh Steelers 25 (6-2)
The Steelers got the ball first in this one, scored and never gave up the lead. At one point in time, the Steelers had 10 first downs while the Patriots had run just three plays. The Patriots pulled within six points in the fourth with under three minutes to go, but were not able to overcome the Steelers. Pittsburgh got a late safety to seal it. Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, threw for 365 yards while Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, threw for 198 yards.
Cleveland Browns 10 (3-4), San Francisco 49ers 20 (6-1)
If you look at the stats in this one, there is one that stands out. 49ers Running Back, Frank Gore, had 31 carries and rushed for 134 yards. San Francisco had 174 total rushing yards, while the Browns were only able to rush for 66 on the day. The 49ers continue to play well for first year head coach, Jim Harbaugh and are running away with the NFC West Division.
Cincinnati Bengals 34 (5-2), Seattle Seahawks 12 (2-5)
The surprising Bengals continue to play well behind first year Quarterback, Andy Dalton. Dalton threw two touchdowns and two interceptions in this one. Seattle failed to execute when they needed it most and it cost them once again. Cincinnati led 17-12 in the fourth before they put it away for good.
Dallas Cowboys 7 (3-4), Philadelphia Eagles 34 (3-4)
Sunday night in Philadelphia saw the Eagles get the ball first, score on their first possession and never let up on the accelerator. The Eagles led 24-0 at the half and ran all over the Cowboys defense, gaining 239 rushing yards. Eagles quarterback, Michael Vick, threw for 279 yards and ran for another 50.
NFL Stats of the Day:
- Redskins Head Coach, Mike Shanahan, coached his 267th game on Sunday, it was the first time his team was shutout.
- The average margin of victory in Sunday night games this year is 18.625 points.
- The Miami Dolphins are 0-7 for only the second time in franchise history.
